Frequently Asked Questions

Kaniyan Poongundranar is a famous Tamil poet, mathematician and astrologer of Sangam Age. He composed புறநானூறு (Purananooru) and நற்றிணை (Natrinai).

One of his quotes that was well known is யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர் (Yaadhum oorey yaavarum keleer) which means I am a world citizen and all are my brothers and sisters.

Puranānūru 192, Poet Kaniyan Poonkundranār, Thinai: Pothuviyal, Thurai: Porunmozhi Kānji

Adapted from translation by G.U.Pope
To us all towns are our own, everyone is our kin,
Life’s good comes not from others’ gifts, nor ill,
Pains and pain’s relief are from within,
Death’s no new thing, nor do our bosoms thrill
When joyous life seems like a luscious draught.
When grieved, we patient suffer; for, we deem
This much-praised life of ours a fragile raft
Borne down the waters of some mountain stream
That o’er huge boulders roaring seeks the plain
Tho’ storms with lightning’s flash from darkened skies.
Descend, the raft goes on as fates ordain.
Thus have we seen in visions of the wise!
We marvel not at the greatness of the great;
Still less despise we men of low estate.

Adapted from translation by Vaidehi Herbert
All towns are ours.  Everyone is our kin.
Evil and goodness do not come to us from
Nor do suffering and the ending of suffering.
Death is nothing new.  We do not rejoice
when living is sweet.  We do not say that living
is miserable in hatred.
Through the vision of those who have understood,
we know that precious life makes its way like a raft
riding a powerful huge river that roars endlessly,
fed by cold rains with bolts of lightning as it crashes
against rocks.
We are not awed by those who are great.  More
than that, we do not despise those who are weak!

ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) is an organization aiming to improve and expand the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction. The ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines provide a means of assessing the proficiency of a foreign language speaker. It is widely used in schools and universities in the United States and the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview is the most widely used oral proficiency test in North America.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated in English as CEFR or CEF or CEFRL, is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and, increasingly, in other countries. The CEFR is also intended to make it easier for educational institutions and employers to evaluate the language qualifications of candidates to education admission or employment. It was put together by the Council of Europe as the main part of the project “Language Learning for European Citizenship” between 1989 and 1996. Its main aim is to provide a method of learning, teaching and assessing which applies to all languages in Europe. In November 2001, a European Union Council Resolution recommended using the CEFR to set up systems of validation of language ability. The six reference levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) are becoming widely accepted as the European standard for grading an individual’s language proficiency.
